The Anti-Counterfeits Act, 2008
| The much anticipated Anti-Counterfeits Bill 2008 has finally become Law after the President’s assent on the 24th December 2008.
The move by Parliament has sent much relief to both industry and government players who have been pushing hard for the passing of the legislation.
The Act, seeks to protect locally manufactured products from unfair competition from counterfeit products that are either imported or produced locally.
It is also aimed protecting mwananchi from the harmful effects of the cheap substandard products which portend both health and safety risks to users. These include medicines, food products and electronics among others.
To act as a deterrent against counterfeit products, the Act provides for punitive punishment against counterfeiters and traders in counterfeit products.
